What’s In My Bag

In honor of #nationalhandbagday and my long-standing bag addiction, I thought it would be appropriate to finally write a what’s in my bag post.

I’ve always been a big purse girl. I for some reason felt the need to carry my entire life around with me on a daily basis. For my birthday/Christmas last year, my boyfriend was generous enough to surprise me with the bag I’d been lusting over for quite some time, the Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM (boyfriend’s initials are GM so I thought it was only fitting). After carrying it around for a while, I began to notice pain in my neck and shoulders, which I initially attributed to our frenchie’s need to cuddle with me while sleeping. After switching around our sleeping arrangement, I noticed my pain wasn’t anywhere close to going away. It killed me to admit it, but my bag was too big and I was going to have to find something else to carry around.

I knew a cross-body style bag was going to be my best option, but nothing seemed to fit everything I needed. The solution to my problem? The Louis Vuitton Pouchette Métis! It was a bag I’d been lusting after for quite some time. One day while joking around, I suggested that GM buy it for an upcoming Kings of Leon concert my sister and I were going to, to which he said maybe if he worked a little harder and increased his paycheck a little, I’d get a new purse and he’d buy himself another gun (because we don’t have enough already). Well, he did and a couple of weeks later the bag was mine!

I now carry only the essentials: my wallet, an agenda since I still feel the need to write things down (plus a recent speeding ticket that still needs to be paid), two sets of keys (one for home and one for work), a knife (which GM thinks is for protection, but I just use it to open deliveries), my new iPhone 6, and little makeup bag. Everything fits perfectly and I don’t ever feel like I’m missing anything.

While I used to carry around a huge makeup bag that I never seemed to use, this bag has forced me to downsize, which seems to work out better. I now just carry around my lip products for the day (I’m loving a red lip lately), some eye drops (because contacts are irritating sometimes), hand cream with SPF (since I’m about as pale as it gets and basically allergic to the sun), a travel-sized mascara, and hair ties (because I can never seem to find one when I need one).

Adjusting to a smaller bag hasn’t been all that easy. I went from carrying a giant tote bag on a daily basis to a small cross-body, but after a couple of weeks, I’ve got everything fine-tuned and can’t imagine carrying anything else (until the next must-have bag comes along). Happy #nationalhandbagday to all my fellow purse obsessed people out there!

His and Hers Flowers

Well, it’s been about four months so it seems like it’s time for another post. I thought I’d do a little something different with a little DIY.

Since moving into our first house, my boyfriend and I have been fighting over how to decorate. I was determined to go with a rustic, beach cottage vibe while my gun-totting boyfriend wanted a rifle above the TV (NOT going to happen). After suggesting things to each other for a few years, I decided it was time to blend our styles, which seemed impossible.

Every couple of weeks, a bunch of ammo cans show up on our doorstep. While my boyfriend tends to leave them around the house for me to trip over (its happened more times than I’d like to admit), I had the random idea to start making use of them.

This week my mom and I got back into our weekly habit of trips to our local farmers market. While I always treat myself to fresh flowers, the lovely 95 degree weather this morning wasn’t so great for the flowers there, so I walked away empty handed and a little discouraged. After making the trek over to Trader Joe’s to pickup a few other things, I decided to pick up a couple bunches of stock and lithianthus. While I normally stick to one color palette, there was something about the blush pink stock that drew me in. After spending some time at my parents house (and snagging a scrap piece of wood from my dad), I headed home and decided to pop into my local grocery store since their roses are usually pretty nice for a fairly reasonable price.

So after putting away all the groceries and getting everything organized, it was time to put everything together. Since the ammo can had a raised center, I used the piece of wood to create a stable base for three mason jars to sit on.

After that, I just started trimming and arranging the flowers. I started with the roses, which actually took up more space than I anticipated, then used the stock and lithianthus to fill in the empty spaces until I could barely fit anymore stems in.

This has quickly turned into favorite decor item in our house and I am completely obsessed. It is definitely my favorite arrangement to date, which is a little weird since it is different than anything I usually put together. Plus, my boyfriend who thinks buying flowers is a complete waste of money and groans every time I come home with a bunch was pretty impressed, so it looks like we’ve got a win/win here. I cannot wait to recreate this over the next couple of months and start making use of all of those empty ammo cans!

My Latest Obsession (number one)

Well that was a long break! I think this new format of weekly or daily themes might encourage me to blog a little more consistently. So to start things off, let me introduce you to My Latest Obsession Sunday. As most people who know me can attest to, once I find a product I like I tend to become obsessed and purchase the entire collection or the same item in every color.

To start things off, I decided to introduce something I’ve been wanting to try for what seems like forever. I’ve been looking for a signature scent for some time and haven’t been able to find one that I’ve wanted to repurchase after I’d finished the first bottle. It feels like I’ve tried pretty much everything. I really wanted something classic and simple and I think I’ve finally found it.

A couple of weeks ago, my mom and I took my grandma shopping so she could update her wardrobe. After a very successful day for grandma, I realized her local mall had a Nordstroms (my local mall has about three stores worth anyone’s time). So while my mom went to put all of grandma’s purchases in the car, grandma and I made our way to the Jo Malone counter. When we got to the counter there were quite a few people there so I was excited to take a look around. After trying a few scents on my own that I thought would be my perfect match (I’m a fresh/citrus girl so I thought Grapefruit would be for me), the Jo Malone consultant asked if I needed any help. After telling her what I usually go for, she suggested a couple of scents for me to try. After spraying the scents on pieces of black grosgrain ribbon (that pretty much sold me right there!) I finally found it, my signature scent, Wild Bluebell. Not only was the scene exactly what I was looking for, just take a look at that packaging (anyone who knows me will tell you I am a major packaging junkie).

Now I have to take a second to tell you about the amazing experience I had at the counter. Now I’m not usually one for assisted shopping (I tend to avoid cosmetic counters and head to straight to Sephora to take my time trying out products myself). The ladies at the Jo Malone counter have completely changed my mind about cosmetic counters. After walking me through as many scents as I wanted to try and I had finally decided on Wild Bluebell, the Jo Malone ladies made my day even better (if that was possible). I have one word for you…SAMPLES! Jo Malone is known for scent combining. So I walked away with my main scent of Wild Bluebell, a sample of body crème, and five testers of scents that would work well layered with Wild Bluebell.

After spending the next couple of weeks obsessing over everything Jo Malone, Easter rolled around and my aunt and uncle gave me a Bloomingdale’s gift card. It took me a matter of seconds before I decided what I was going to use it for. One week later, the Wild Bluebell candled showed up on my doorstep. All I have to say is thank goodness the Wild Bluebell collection is somewhat limited compared to some other scents, otherwise my entire house would be drowning in Jo Malone.

Here’s hoping I can keep up this weekly obsessions post and not wait too long in between posts again!

Here goes nothing…

With the beginning of a new year, I’ve decided to bite the bullet and start a blog. This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for some time now and decided that 2014 is going to be my year to get things done. I’m typically the kind of person who talks about doing things, but then sits back and watches everyone else do them. This year is going to be different!

I’ve had some major life changes in the past couple of years from getting a new puppy, moving into a new house with my boyfriend, to finally finishing school, and starting work full time at my dream job, I find myself with time to actually start this little blog.

While my plan is to include everything from home decor, fashion, and lifestyle posts, this blog is going to keep me accountable to the goals I want to accomplish this year. While everyone is making resolutions (like finally kicking my hangnail biting habit), this blog is going to document the life changes I hope to make. From learning to cook, getting back in shape, and organizing my life, I hope you all enjoy following this journey of mine!
